We moved the kids’ carseats together so they are all in one row. They wanted them that way and some minutes everyone is almost singing Kumbaya and others I am singing “No one say anyone’s name or touch each other or breathe in your sister’s hair.”
There is constant chatter now that all three are lined up behind me or maybe they are just so close I hear every word.
On our last round of errands, McKenna ask the car-full a very McKenna-esque question. Interrupting the deep conversation I was having with myself in my head she said:
“What kind of people are we?”
And the answers came rolling in.
Ashlyn: “We are Irish.”
Parker: “We are love. We are loving! Right Mommy? We are loving??”
Sawyer: (answers disqualified because every. single. one had to do with a body part, function or fluid)
McKenna: “Oh, I know what kind of people we are. We are pink, no we are purple.”

Me: “We are purple?! I didn’t know we were purple. When did we turn purple?
McKenna: “Mommmm, we are purple because it’s my favorite and we are my favorite.”
And everyone agreed that we are their favorite and Parker even said we are his “fwavowit” in the way he says it that I make him promise will never change. Because it’s the best mispronunciation of a word ever and I need to record it that way because it makes me want him to be five for 20 more years or so.
I’m pretty sure when there are no carseats to line my backseat this is what I will remember. The conversations I hurry to write down will erase all the ones about how I would really like to drink my coffee hot with a side of no one spilling it into my lap.
They are my favorite.
Ask your kids the same question. Ask them what kind of people you are and see what they come up with. I loved how all of their personalities came out in their answers and would love to hear what your kids say too.
